NFPA 285 and Air Barriers: Make the Right Selection

July 16, 2020 @ 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT

Live webinar sponsored by the Air Barrier Association of America

NFPA 285 and Air Barriers: Make the Right Selection

Presented by Peter Barrett

The relationship between the air barrier/water-resistive barrier and NFPA 285 compliance is often misunderstood. Clarity will be added by going beyond the standard misconception that one must consider NFPA 285 requirements only if the building is taller than 40 feet. The broadly misunderstood issues around compliance with the building code often lead to specifying non-compliant assemblies unknowingly.

Using information from a wide array of sources, the effects of insulation choice and cladding choice as it relates to selection of the air barrier/water-resistive barrier, as well as the membrane’s location within the wall system, will be examined in detail.  Manufacturer NFPA 285 compliance documentation, which can be difficult to interpret, will be examined for design and field use.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To recognize situations where NFPA 285 requirements must be met.
  2. How/when exceptions to NFPA 285 apply (and don’t apply).
  3. About risk and liability where the code is not being met due to improper interpretation of test reports or engineering evaluations.
  4. To clearly understand manufacturer’s NFPA 285 compliance documents as they relate to claddings, insulation, and air barrier assemblies.

Live webinar airing on July 16, 2020 – 1:00 PM EST
