Environmental Separation Between the Built Environment and the Natural Environment 1.0 CEU/HSW

March 6 @ 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EST

Environmental separation between the built environment and the natural environment. The intent is to use as-built Power Point slides and actual physical mock-ups of various transitions to illustrate air barrier considerations and approaches. In addition to highlighting air barrier transitions, receivers, and approaches, fire resiliency and renewable detailing will be discussed. For example if we have an exterior air barrier with continuous exterior insulation and this wall meets a shingle roof how do you replace the shingles without disrupting the existing water resistive barrier and exterior air barrier control layers.

Learning Objectives:

  1.  Discuss building enclosure control layers in comparison with natures control layers.
  2. Airtightness and Thermal approaches.
  3.  Discuss Fire Resiliency and enclosure durability achieved by default.
  4.  Review renewable detailing approached (roof shingles, deck and balcony membranes.

James Bourget, Principal, ABET, RRO, CPHT, RDH

James is deeply committed to advancing industry standards and knowledge. He actively contributes to initiatives supporting the implementation of the BC Step Code, providing hands-on airtightness training to builders and contractors. Moreover, he shares his wealth of expertise as an instructor at the High-Performance Building Lab at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, where he has earned recognition for his exceptional dedication and teaching excellence.

In acknowledgment of his outstanding contributions, James has been honored with the prestigious BCIT Teaching Excellence Award in 2021 and the Vancouver Regional Construction Association Excellence for Educational Leadership award in 2022.

Currently, James is engaged with the Canadian Home Builders Association of British Columbia and the Community Energy Association, spearheading hands-on training programs focused on high-performance building enclosure assemblies across British Columbia. These training sessions cover topics such as building science fundamentals, constructibility considerations, innovative detailing concepts that enhance primary building enclosure controls (air, water, and thermal), and building enclosure fire resiliency.
