Resolutions to the Most Common Building Science Challenges

June 10, 2021 @ 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT

Live webinar sponsored by the Air Barrier Association of America
This presentation will give mini case studies – each one selected to demonstrate a common building science challenge in our industry, an analysis technique to resolve the challenge, and a solution. Example building science case studies include to vent or not vent a soffit, quantifying the melting point of a WRB behind steel cladding, verifying thermal comfort with exposed concrete, limits of using continuous insulation on the interior side of wood sheathing, downside of using light-colored single-ply roofing membranes, the best way to detail flanged windows, and options for using spray foam in traditional vented attic spaces. Analysis techniques for resolving these mini case studies will include hygrothermal modeling, thermal comfort calculations, roofing core cuts, vapor emissions testing, and water and air infiltration testing.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn practical solutions to common building science questions in our industry.
  2. Understand the role of hygrothermal modeling in resolving tricky building science questions.
  3. Learn how thermal comfort is measured and can be verified.
  4. Learn how to use a variety of techniques (testing, core cuts, etc.) that can be used to help resolve common building science questions.
